Forward Together Breakout Session: Climate and Environment

Panelists discussed current climate science research and how elements of various faith traditions, combined with cutting edge science, can provide resources and tools for communities. DoSER's 25th Anniversary, June 2021.

This session was hosted as part of the 2021 virtual 25th Anniversary event, “Forward Together: Where Science, Ethics, and Religion Intersect in a Changing World.

In the US, religious communities are working closely with scientists, civic leaders, and policymakers to address the causes and effects of climate change. In this session, panelists discussed current climate science research and how elements of various faith traditions, combined with cutting edge science, can provide resources and tools for communities.

Nana Firman, Senior Ambassador, GreenFaith

Nana Firman is GreenFaith’s Senior Ambassador. An Indonesian, she directed WWF-Indonesia’s “Green Reconstruction” efforts during a post-tsunami period and developed an urban climate change adaptation and mitigation initiative. An internationally recognized speaker, she is one of 20 Earth Defenders featured in One Earth: People of Color Protecting Our Planet.

J. Marshall Shepherd, Director, Atmospheric Sciences Program, University of Georgia

Dr. Marshall Shepherd is the Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor of Geography and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Georgia and Director of its Atmospheric Sciences Program. He was the 2013 President of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). Prior to academia, Dr. Shepherd spent 12 years as a scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and was Deputy Project Scientist of the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission. He is the host of The Weather Channel’s Weather Geeks Podcast and a senior contributor to Forbes Magazine. In 2021, Dr. Shepherd was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous awards including the 2004 White House PECASE Award, the Captain Planet Foundation Protector of the Earth Award, the 2019 AGU Climate Communication Prize, the 2020 Mani L. Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement with Science and the 2018 AMS Helmut Landsberg Award. He received his B.S., M.S. and PhD in meteorology from Florida State University.

Emily Therese Cloyd, Director, AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology

Emily Therese Cloyd is the director for the AAAS Center for Public Engagement with Science and Technology. Emily oversees all Center programming, including the AAAS Leshner Leadership Institute and the Communicating Science program. Prior to joining AAAS in 2016, Emily led engagement and outreach for the U.S. Global Change Research Program, served as a Knauss Marine Policy Fellow at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and studied the use of ecological models in Great Lakes management. She holds a Master’s in Conservation Biology (SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry) and a Bachelor’s in Plant Biology (University of Michigan). Emily is always up for a paddle on the Potomac or Anacostia Rivers, especially if it is in a dragon boat, and recently hiked the Tour du Mont Blanc.
